BREAKING NEWS: Marquese Chriss follows Bismack Biyombo to locker room in Game 5

The end of Game 5 between the Suns and Mavericks was like a scene right out of reality TV.

With just a few seconds left in regulation — and the Suns leading by 28 points — Dallas forward Marquese Chriss and Phoenix center Bismack Biyombo had a heated moment under the basket and then took their feud into the locker room hallways.

The chippy situation began when Chriss fouled Biyombo on a lob, which led to Biyombo approaching Chriss, who pushed his arm away. Referee David Guthrie handed each player a technical foul with seconds to go in the fourth quarter.

The players were subsequently ejected, but then, Chriss followed Biyombo off the court and through the tunnel. Chriss was supposed to exit the court through the opposite tunnel to the visitors’ locker room. But he knew his way around the Footprint Center, as Chriss played the first two seasons of his career in Phoenix from 2016 to 2018.

As players and coaches were standing around, security and other personnel immediately sprung into action to deescalate the situation. Reggie Miller, who was calling the game on TNT, even complimented the staff for acting fast to tend to the situation.

It didn’t take long for staff from both teams to escort Chriss back through the tunnel and onto the court to get to the Dallas locker room. Chriss and Biyombo did not speak to reporters after the game.

“I get the competitiveness of the game, but we’re just trying to win the game,” Suns coach Monty Williams said after the game. “All the stuff that happens that’s extracurricular, I don’t have anything to say about that. I understand how chippy it can be. We just want to win the game and that’s it. We’re trying to get one more win, and that’s our focus right now.”

After Dallas suffered a 30-point loss (110-80), a somber Luka Doncic was headed back to the locker room and said, “Everybody acting tough when they up. Everybody acting tough.”

The Suns’ defense ultimately carried them to a Game 5 victory, and Phoenix plans to carry over that strategy to Game 6. Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton combined for 48 points. Mikal Bridges and Cameron Johnson added 14 points apiece.
